Between peforming in º ³ ³º W.E.T. and writing and producing for names like º ³ ³º Toby Hitchcock, Jimi Jamison and Adrenaline º ³ ³º Rush, he has made a big impact on the melodic º ³ ³º rock scene in the last few years. And then º ³ ³º there’s Eclipse, the band he fronts alongside º ³ ³º guitarist and songwriting partner Magnus º ³ ³º Henriksson. Their 2012 album Bleed and Scream is º ³ ³º arguably the decade’s best melodic rock album. º ³ ³º Now they’re back with their eagerly-anticipated º ³ ³º follow-up, titled Armageddonize. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º If for some reason you’re a fan of Swedish º ³ ³º melodic rock and haven’t heard this band (and if º ³ ³º so, what’s wrong with you?), Eclipse hits the º ³ ³º sweet spot between AOR and hard rock, with a º ³ ³º definite nod to the ’80s arena rocking heyday. º ³ ³º They have all of the melody and electricity of º ³ ³º bands like H.E.A.T. and Reckless Love, but with º ³ ³º a harder rocking crunch. Henriksson and º ³ ³º Martensson’s guitar work is right out front, so º ³ ³º there’s never any question whether Eclipse is º ³ ³º closer to pop than rock. Beyond his considerable º ³ ³º guitar playing, songwriting and producing º ³ ³º skills, Martensson is a hell of a singer as º ³ ³º well, and he gives a dynamite performance here. º ³ ³º The backing vocals are fantastic too, and add º ³ ³º even more power to the already catchy choruses º ³ ³º on Armageddonize. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º As to the album itself, Armegeddonize is very º ³ ³º much in the same style as Bleed and Scream. It º ³ ³º opens with a monster of a hard rock song called º ³ ³º “I Don’t Wanna Say I’m Sorry,” which immediately º ³ ³º grabs you by the throat. “The Storm” is probably º ³ ³º the catchiest song on the album, and the first º ³ ³º one that you’ll find yourself humming the melody º ³ ³º later. Not that there’s a non-catchy song to be º ³ ³º found here. Armageddonize is one hard-hitting, º ³ ³º extremely melodic song after another. “Wide º ³ ³º Open” and “Caught Up in the Rush” are classic º ³ ³º Eclipse (and could have made great W.E.T. songs º ³ ³º as well), and “Breakdown” sounds like a lost º ³ ³º Tangier or Junkyard track. Even the ballad “Live º ³ ³º Like I’m Dying” is powerful. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º So here’s the big question: Is Armageddonize º ³ ³º better than Bleed and Scream? Time and repeated º ³ ³º spins will tell, and rest assured you WILL be º ³ ³º playing this one many times in the months ahead. º ³ ³º Eclipse definitely didn’t take a step backwards º ³ ³º here. Armageddonize is an extremely strong º ³ ³º melodic rock album, and is an early favorite for º ³ ³º the best melodic rock album of 2015.
