Soul

Chaka Khan (* 23. März 1953 als Yvette Marie Stevens in North Chicago, Illinois) ist eine US-amerikanische Soul- bzw. Jazz-Sängerin. Sie nahm den Namen Chaka an, als sie sich am kostenlosen Frühstücksprogramm der Black Panther Party beteiligte. Mitte der 1970er Jahre begann sie ihre musikalische Karriere als Sängerin der Funkband Rufus und konnte mit der Hilfe Stevie Wonders und dem Titel Tell Me Something Good 1974 in den Pop- und Funkcharts Fuß fassen. Während der späten 1970er und frühen 1980er Jahre hatte die Band als Rufus featuring Chaka Khan eine Reihe von Hits, darunter Sweet Thing, Once You Get Started (1975), At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) (1977), Do You Love What You Feel (1979) und Ain't Nobody (1983). 1978 veröffentlichte Chaka Khan parallel zu ihrer Karriere mit Rufus auch ihr erstes Solodebüt, das schlicht Chaka betitelt wurde

Between 1993 and 1995 she recorded a number of tracks for the follow-up album, to be called 'Dare You To Love Me', with a proposed release date of January 1996. However, when recording was complete and it was presented to Warner Bros., they rejected it, citing a lack of commercial viability.
Despite their contention that the songs from 'Dare You To Love Me' were not commercial, they still included six of them on 1996's 'Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1'. This was the last straw for Khan, who then left the label, stating that they had neglected her, and failed to release 'Dare You To Love Me'.
